About

Hi I am Theo Huzyk. I graduated from USC’s psychiatry residency in 2019, happened upon jail work in 2021 at the recommendation of one of my coresidents, and have been treating forensic patients ever since. I have worked in nearly all of the jail’s treatment areas, and have been a supervising psychiatrist both at the LA County Jail and Patton State Hospital.
With LA County being by far the most populous county in the country, its jail system is therefore the largest mental health facility in the country. Psychiatric patients at the jail run the gamut from the revolving door of meth users charged with low level crimes, interesting presentations of serious mental illness, to high profile. I take pride in the experience I have gained here, and the significant improvements in care I have helped institute.
With LA County in the throes of a budget crisis, yet still reliant on expensive contract psychiatrists, I think we can do a better job providing care more efficiently, and enticing capable psychiatrists to work here. Why will this outfit be better than the status quo?
- My goal is not to make passive income off my colleagues, but to continue to work full-time under this outfit and extend a high rate to my hardworking colleagues.
- The current staffing agencies all have office personnel that require them to take a significant cut from what they pay psychiatrists. In the age of generative AI, things can be done more efficiently. I have no admin staff or overhead, and I will pay the highest rate of any of the other agencies. Single docs have formed their own groups for the State Hospital system, and we can do the same here.
- The jail is a clunky place and historically the average psychiatrist sees 10 patients per 10-hour shift. I can help us improve upon this by likely 10–20%.
