About

Hi, I am Theo Huzyk. I graduated from USC’s psychiatry residency in 2019, happened upon jail work in 2021 at the recommendation of one of my coresidents, and have been treating forensic patients ever since. I have worked in nearly all of the jail’s treatment areas, and have been a supervising psychiatrist both at the LA County Jail and Patton State Hospital.
With LA County being by far the most populous county in the country, its jail system is therefore the largest mental health facility in the country. Psychiatric patients at the jail run the gamut from the revolving door of meth users charged with low level crimes, dramatic presentations of serious mental illness, to high profile. It is a very interesting place to work, and a well-paid hidden gem in a desirable California setting.
LA County is in the throes of a budget crisis, yet still reliant on expensive contract psychiatrists. I think we can do a better job providing efficient care, and enticing capable psychiatrists to work here. Why will this operation be better than the status quo?
- My goal is not to make passive income off my colleagues, but to continue to work full-time under this outfit and extend a high rate to my hardworking colleagues.
- The current staffing agencies all have significant overhead that requires them to cut in to what they pay psychiatrists. I have worked with single docs who became direct vendors for the State Hospital system, and found it a vastly more satisfying experience than working with an agency. We can do the same here in LA County.
- I have developed programs to simplify much of our bureaucratic burden at the jail, and will share these with you. I will also be working right alongside you, and always available for guidance.
